The speed relay monitors the position of the accelerator pedal and the engine speed. It is used as soon as the driver takes his foot off the gas pedal and thus the vehicle is in coasting mode.

In overrun, the relay shuts off fuel at engine speeds above 1,500 rpm. If the engine speed falls below the value of 1,300 rpm, the fuel supply is re-introduced to prevent the engine from stalling due to low engine speed.
